What’s the big deal about Covergirls, anyway? A case study.

July 31, 2009

Let’s stray from the next feature article of Bloom for a little bit of a sidetracked post about winning Covergirl.

Even since Mel (bluegreen86) won Covergirl a few days ago, I’ve already gotten two messages in my inbox with nearly the same thing. Right off the bat, I’m against mailing people with messages, asking them to vote for you. Let’s take a look.

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

NUMBER 1. Here is the message I got from Mel:

“Hello!
One of my goals and dreams for here on stardoll is to win Covergirl, and I am really trying and petitioning to win it today! So would you please please vote for me? It only takes 2 seconds of your time, and would mean the world for me!
If you do in fact vote for me, sign my guestbook saying you did and then you will be automatically entered into a raffle! If I win superstar, I will be giving away a Superstar code worth 200sd to someone who voted for me! So this is a great deal for you as well! Thank you so much for reading!
Also, if you have any other accounts or friends you can tell, please do so for me! And if you ever need a favor in the future, you can count on me!”

I thought that this message was very well written. The way the Mel wrote about the raffle, it came off much more like a gift, rather than an incentive for you to vote for her. It seemed very much like a little “thank-you for voting” rather than a “I bought a code so that people would vote for me”. Do you see it?

NUMBER 2. Now, the next message I got was from abercrombie3434. This one said:

“Hello! One of my goals and dreams for here on stardoll is to win Covergirl, and I am really trying and petitioning to win it today! So would you please please vote for me? It only takes 2 seconds of your time, and would mean the world for me!If you do in fact vote for me, sign my guestbook saying you did and then you will be automatically entered into a raffle! If I win, I will be giving away a Pre-paid card worth 1,200sd to someone who voted for me! So this is a great deal for you as well! Thank you so much for reading! Also, if you have any other accounts or friends you can tell, please do so for me! And if you ever need a favor in the future, you can count on me!”

Eerily familiar? That’s because it’s a near-exact copy of Mel‘s message to her friends. Does somebody who copies somebody else’sdeserve request for votes deserve to win Covergirl even to win? I think most of us would agree– um, no.

NUMBER 3. Later on, I got a message from a girl who used to be one of my best friends on Stardoll. Lately however, I’ve just been getting half-sincere, half-polite messages every few months from her, that say something like “omg i miss u!” or “omg we havent talked in forever!” We would reply back and forth for a few days, and the conversation would end. It would pick up a month or two later, when I’d get another one of her somewhat friendly messages. Here’s the message I got from xodanigirlxosta.

hey guys
well as you may have heard i really want to badly win cg
but i cant do this alone
just open a few tabs on my suite adn click 5/5. if i win and u vote for me a few times using the tabs ( u have 2 do it at 1x just open 5 tabs all aimed on my suite and go to each 1 1 after the other and click 5/5) you will be set in a raffle to win some stardollars! so please help me reach my dream. and 1 lucky winner will have theirs reached when i help them win covergirl
thanks for the support
Danielle”

There are a few reasons why I’m against this.

1. The girl who sent it is one that I figure to be a little bit selfish and a lot shallow.

2. The grammar errors, lack of punctuation, caps, and spelling mistakes make it seem like she sent it out in 30 seconds. A little along the lines of “no pain, no gain” is the lesson that Danielle should learn. Put in some effort and maybe you’ll get farther.

3. She’s advocating voting for her more than once. Whether the duplicate votes are actually recorded, um, I feel that this is actually cheating. Each person gets one vote, and that is why you mail more than just a few friends to vote for you.

4. One very popular, very well-known person has already used this technique. So it’s obviously not original. It was clearly too much work to think of an original way to win Covergirl. It’s just so much easier to copy somebody who already has won! Right?

5. Reason 5 is more like a compiled reason. Girls who are lazy, unoriginal, fame-obsessed, or cheaters simply do not deserve to win Covergirl.

I actually had a quasi-conversation with Danielle about how her message was very unoriginal. It went like this:

Me:           “Didn’t bluegreen86 do this exact same thing?”

Danielle: “i helped mel lol”

Me:           “Well I guess what I meant was it wasn’t original…”

Danielle: “what do you mean anyone canwin cg u cant make that original i dont get what your talkin about”

Me:          “No i mean that, Bluegreen86 sent out a different message when she mailed her friends, but she also asked her friends to vote for her and then write in her guestbook to be entered into a raffle. Which is what you did.
Abercrombie3434 did the same thing too but copied Bluegreen86′s exact message.
I’m just saying, that it isn’t original or even really Covergirl kind of actions to copy what other people do.
Plus for a raffle, people aren’t voting for you because you deserve it–they’re voting for you because they can gain something. Not because they think that you can.”

Danielle: “i didnt even know she did a raffle”

(Let’s review…Mel is on Danielle’s best friends list. In all likelihood, Mel sent her message to Danielle as well. I’m betting that this isn’t true.)

———————————————————————————————————————————————-

So you might see why I’m questioning this whole concept of Covergirl. Nobody ever set down what the Covergirl criteria was, am I right? For example: Miss America contestants are ideally polite, confident, talented, and poised. What does a Stardoll Covergirl need to be like?

No one would object to a polite, confident, talented and poised Covergirl. I believe that Mel was all four of those things.

People are always objecting to whether somebody “deserves” to be Covergirl. Who is deserving? Who defines that? I don’t ever recall an official message from Callie or any Stardoll official, ever defining the purpose of Covergirl or how you can deserve it. (They do, however, have a little help here.)

So tell me, Bloom readers…

What’s your opinion in all this?

What kind of person deserves to be Covergirl?

Tell me in a comment on this post.

I agree with you, covergirls shouldn’t be so random as they are right now. The whole covergirl thing lost it’s charm a long time ago, but Bluegreen brought it back for a little while because she is the first in a LONG time to deserve the status. But no matter what, when you think about it a bit it is all rather ridiculous, softly speaking. I mean if people really consider being a covergirl on stardoll.com their dream and spend their time and effort into that, then they seriously should get a life.

  2. Bluegreen86 Says:

Thank you so much for saying the kind things you did about me! I actually got that Abercrombie girl’s messege, and I was so shocked! I do not know why she wouldcopy my exact messege, and then why would she send it to me?! Lol! I agreed about what you had to say for the most part in this post!

Also to the girl who commented above me, it is not my life dream to win CG on stardoll, I just thought it would be something that would be great to experience!

I agree…I was surprised that people thought they would get away with it, like nobody would notice that it is the EXACT same. That girl was dumb for sending it to you too…I mean, she copied it from you! Sigh.
      You are welcome, also.

  3. Xodanigirlxosta Says:

Ok yeah some things about me your right but others are flawed.
Mel wasnt the first one to come up with a raffle was she? no others used it too. So saying i copied her with said raffle is incorrect. She didnt patent the raffle so anyone can use it. and yeah i didnt know Mel was having a raffle all she messaged me in a conversation was oh hey i wanna win cg tomorrow help me? and i helped her.

and you know why i hardly messaged you. i always told u why i couldnt message. heck i didnt even request you on my other account for months after i moved cause i didnt want to talk to anyone after the harassment. and i hardly logged on xodanigirlxosta so thats really rude to put up against me.
so honestly i think your just mad at me over the yelling you sent to me after i sent u the cg message.

    oh and 1 more thing
i wasnt the first to use the multiple vote things. someone you aparently worship used it too herself. so apparently she cheated too and won but yet u still worship her

im just saying my side of the story. im not selfish and low, i just wanted to win cg before i quit sd. cause no one can win anymore just by having a nice suite, you have to message, raffles, bribe, etc etc to win it.

    Ciao
    Danny

I sort of agree with you. The Covergirl is just decided by who gets the most votes from other users, right? Well, like you said, some people only vote for others because they have a “chance to win a superstar gift code” or something. It doesn’t really mean anything if someone wins that way. Covergirl should be decided based on something other than that.

But, (and before I start I want to say that I have nothing against Bluegreen86 or you) Bluegreen86 just sent a dollmail to all of her friends asking for them to vote her Covergirl and sign in her guestbook so that they would be entered in a raffle to win a ss giftcode.

First of all, she did the same thing that a lot of people do which is offering a prize to someone that votes her Covergirl. I see no difference, whatsoever between what she did and what others did.

Second, sending a dollmail to all of your friends isn’t exactly what I would call an “original way to win Covergirl”. Lots of people have done that so you should not critisize people for sending a dollmail to their friends like that.
But, I see why you did critisize them in this situation: they copied Bluegreen86′s message. I understand that.

Thank you and again, I have nothing against Bluegreen86 or you. I hope we can be friends. Also, I really like your magazine!
